  1. I would probably start in John if I were to begin reading it.
Then go to Luke, then Matthew, then Mark, then Acts.

Acts is pretty exciting-it's an excellent read.

I started to read it cover to cover when I was in high school and I was criticized by the church for doing this. I was told it was "wrong" and the bible wasn't meant to be read that way. I guess the church likes to pick and choose what you see in there.

It's actually pretty smutty from what I remember. Incest, trickery, manipulation. If you can get past the thick language, it is the stuff of daytime television.

By your reply you passively imply my view is ignorant. Did you really think about what I posted?

    Ohm,

This is a delicate and tough question. I don't want to jump right into an answer. I will think about it while your out camping. I'll have you an answer when you get back.

Have fun. - Watch out for bears =)

  8. /lol

That's not the way scripture says to pray.
    Nice try.
Wonder why it doesn't work-hmmmm-maybe cause
that's not the way God said to pray.

    James 5:14-15 =) Have a nice day =)

Ok it's official, you are smoking something pretty good.

  10. hey, I'm just tellin u what scripture says.
You can't expect to find some loophole to get around God's word.
    Doesn't work that way.

and oh yeah-I quit that stuff a long time ago =)

    Thank goodness

Nowhere in that passage does it say anything about the correct way to prey for anything. And if it's not to be done in that manner how is it meant to be done? And why bother praying personally for your family when thats not how it's done?

sigh.. the underlying problem with all religion. It can be interpreted in any way by whoever reads it. :(

  12. interpretation

I don't see how this passage could be interpreted anyway other
    than points 1-4?
Maybe I have forgotten how your seeing it, b/c I haven't been in your shoes in several years. (That is a possiblity)
Can you tell me how you interpret those couple of verses?

    Zabby =)

 You refuse to read the article apparently

Oh well no point. I'm not coming back into this thread again.

  14. I must restate hamma's question and ask what you're smoking. =)

  15. 1.-From the story that I read, the sick person did not ask to be prayed for.
What is the difference between, as far as the knowingly prayed for group went, asking to be prayed for and hearing, then accepting, that others are praying for you.
The reason-b/c it's very important to follow the guidelines exactly like what God says. (I know James said this but I'm talking about the inspiration from the Holy Spirit to come up with these directions>)
Let's say you break the law by speeding and you get caught. You can't say, "I was just trying to get to work faster so I could help my boss out." That's not following the guidlines that were set out for you by the laws. The cop isn't gonna say-"hey I know you broke the law-but it's for a good reason. Hey, here is a free get-out-of-jail free card. You let me know anytime you don't want to follow directions and I will do something good for you." Why did God do His instructions this way? - I have no idea. - I just know that when you follow His directions, He blesses you.

2.-The people praying, did not pray over the sick person annointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.
... so your faith-based system requires material items and physical presense? God can not hear the prayers from afar and respond to them? What a great way to argue against hamma's post.
No, it just goes back to doing whatever He tells you to do and exactly like He says to do it. nothing else.

3.-When you pray, you must believe (have faith) that God will answer your prayers.
You don't know that these people didn't have faith in that. This is a pretty simple arguement. The people who had others praying for them, knowingly or not, most likely both contained those who believed god would help them. However, the group that did not have these extra prayers still did not do worse, but in fact did better.
True-I don't know if all these people had faith or not. The outcome just leads me to believe that not all of them did have faith in Christ.
Like I said before, there are alot of groups that claim to be Christians that are very far from it.

4.-How do we know all of these people praying were righteous?
This would only apply if you could assume that ALL of them were not 'righteous'. I find it hard to believe that there wern't any 'righteous' people in these congregations for which the prayers should have helped. Those 'unrighteous' people's prayers would not have effected it adversely.
Not exactly correct here. I have seen in my own church where people who where unrighteous where mixed within the church. I really don't believe God will bless our church when there are unholy people (acting as if they were holy-or-putting on a mask) mixed in and trying to worship God with the incorrect intentions.

5.-very important! - Not everyone that says they are a Christian, really is a Christian.
    Thank God (hehe..)
    I hear ya!!

  16. ... You simply continue to back up your responses with the same text that we're argueing about. You can't write 'This paper is a car' on a sheet of contruction paper and then justify it with 'because it says it's a car!!'. In the same sense, it blows my mind that you think you can back up your ideas with 'because that's the way it is'.

The only one of your responses that seems reasonably throught out by you instead of just 'well i'm brainwashed and this is what the bible says' is the fourth one.

  17. Cyrus,
You kinda have it. It's not necessarily brainwashed, more like cleansed.
I know that since becoming a Christian and following the Bible as much as I can, my life has been very blessed-we are talking a difference of night and day.

I didn't say because that's the way it is, I said it's because that's the way God said it in His word. There really is a big difference there. It really doesn't matter what I think or what I say- it just matters what is....

Hard to explain & obviously i'm not the most eloquent in my writing or speech. sry. I will keep trying to explain the best I can, however many questions you have. Just keep asking them. I enjoy trying to answer them.

... You simply continue to back up your responses with the same text that we're argueing about. If the paper did turn into a car, then it would be reasonable to say that it was a car. - That is exactly what the Bible has done for me.

  18. ... that is, actually, exactly the same thing. 'Because that's the way it is' is the reason you give when you don't have anything else to back up 'the way it is' except the reasons given by 'the way it is'. Surprisingly, "because that's the way God said it in His word." is... the... same... thing...
